CHROME EFFECT

Learn how to create chrome looking text or images


  • Create a new image (800 x 800 px, black background)
  • Hit X to set white foreground
  • Add a white image or text
  • CTRL-Click the image layer to get a selection
  • Go to the channels palette and click the "Save selection as channel" button
  • Gaussian blur the selected image Filters>Blur>Gaussian Blur (12px)
  • Return to the image layer in the layers palette
  • CTRL-D to clear the selection
  • Add lighting effects Filters>Render>Lighting Effects (Use the following settings)
  • Gaussian blur the layer Filters>Blur>Gaussian Blur (2 px)
  • Add a new layer by clicking on the new layer button in the layers palette
  • CTRL-Click the image layer to make a selection of the original image
  • On the new layer, inverse the selection and fill the selection with black
  • CTRL-D to deselect the image and gaussian blur the layer Filters>Blur>Gaussian Blur (12px)
  • CTRL-Click the image layer, inverse the selection and hit delete
  • Create yet another layer and your selection should still be there if you have not deselected it
  • Contract the selection Select>Modify>Contract (4px)
  • Fill the selection with white
  • Select one of the marquee selection tools
  • Hit the down arrow on the keyboard 4 times and the right arrow key 4 times
  • Hit delete and deselect
  • Now Reselect the image layer again (Hold CTRL and click on text layer)
  • Contract it by 4 again, only this time, you fill the selection with black
  • Hitting the up arrow key 4 times and the left arrow 4 times
  • Hit delete and deselect
  • Edit the layer style (Blend Mode: Soft Light)
  • Gaussian blur (2px)
  • CTRL-Click to make a selection and create a new adjustment layer (Layer>New>Adjustment Layer>
  • Select curves as your adjustment
  • A window will show up and just make curve similar to the example
  • Change the adjustment layer blend mode to lighten and you're done
